"!BIOGRAPHY: William Ruffin Smith was a large planter in the Scotland Neck section of Halifax County. The will of William Ruffin Smith (first of the name) was dated Feb. 16, 1844, and probated in Halifax, Aug. 1845. He mentioned his wife Sally Smith (she was Sarah Walton Norfleet, daughter of James Norfleet and Sarah Gordon of Edgecombe County). His son Wm. Ruffin Smith (second of the name) married Susan Evans of Pittsboro, daughter of Peter Evans and Ann Johnston, his wife, daughter of Amos Johnston and Dorcas Williams of Edgecombe County. His daughter Sally Ann Smith, wife of James L.G. Baker, son of Dr. Simmons J. Baker, and grandson of Gen. Lawrence Baker of Hertford and Gates Counties. His son Richard H. Smith, who married Sally Hall, daughter of Judge John Hall and Mary Weldon of Warrenton. His son Robert A. Smith, his son James Norfleet Smith, who married Adelaide Maria Evans, daughter of Peter Evans and his wife Ann Johnston. Adelaide Maria Evans Smith was a sister of Susan Evans, who married Wm. Ruffin Smith 2nd of the name. His daughter Elizabeth Smith, his grand-daughter Emily Turner Baker, who married Dr. Archibald Stuart Hall of Scot Neck. She was daughter of James L.G. Baker and Sally Ann Smith. Dr. Archibald S. Hall, his sons Wm. Ruffin Smith, Richard R. Smith and James N. Smith were executors."
